Just Because I Felt Like It…

I made my first batch of homemade laundry soap tonight.  It was very easy.  Finding the main three ingredients (Twenty Mule Borax, Washing Soda, and Fels Naptha soap) was the hardest part.

I cut the recipe in half so I would just have a small batch to test.

I will post the recipe and my thoughts on it after I have used it for a few days.

  • I want to hear how this worked and get the recipe. Where do you find washing soda? I have the other two ingredients.
I make my own window cleaner. And I use vinegar in my rinse cycle instead of softener. I’m really interested in getting rid of all these harmful chemicals in my house.

I got the washing soda at Winco. They didn’t have it at Wal-Mart, Target, Albertsons, or Fred Meyer. I hear they have it at TOP though.

It doesn’t take very much…borrow some of mine for your first batch! I have enough for several more batches.

Mine detergent set up WAY too thick, so I need to stir it up with some hot water tonight to thin it out.

I am going to try vinegar as softener as well. Have you tried baking soda as well? I hear that works too.

  • did you make the liquid?
do you have half a cup or so of the soda i can try out the powder recipe? i have a partial bar of fels naptha so i will have to grate it first to see how much it is.

Yes! Liquid…and just bring two containers over and I will give you some washing soda and some of the laundry soap to try (actually, just one…I still have the container you sent with Hattie’s breakfast). I have been meaning to write up a review about it and I will soon. I will probably try the dry version sometime too, but I wasn’t sure about how well it would dissolve…so you can tell me how you like it!

I add a couple of Tablespoons of BIZ to most of the loads to help with stains and give it a boost, but I don’t know if it really makes a difference.
